The Scrap Pile (TSP) is aiming to solve one seemingly simple problem. The entertainment industry creates an enormous amount of construction waste- roughly 30% of which is untouched scrap and almost all is eventually torn down and thrown away. With the increase in the retail prices of these materials due to COVID-19 and the economy, many local artists and designers struggle with the cost of these materials, in addition to the storage needed to buy in bulk or save their scraps.
As the entertainment industry has expanded exponentially in the streaming age, so have their piles of trash. In the currently developing arena of climate change, TSP has an opportunity to become a leader for a sustainable solution. TSP aims to reallocate “trash” to “treasure” by creating a retail space making materials available as well as ,a creation space making the creation of art affordable for local artists and community building needs. Our aim is to create a sustainable infrastructure which will remove thousands of pounds of material from the waste stream every year.
TSP has already started receiving material donations from studios around NYC. At this time the business is ready to move into its first home and begin operations, gallery shows, sales and events. We are looking for an industrial space of at least 3,000 sq ft. As well as, financial support from like minded organizations and individuals. We serve the arts, artists and the local community by creating a closed loop system to minimize waste and maximize ART
Our Primary Partners are Film and Theatre production studios around NYC as well as individual makers. When you become a partnering fabrication company, we provide you with a TSP bin and/or QR code stickers to put on your existing scrap piles. Then schedule your recurring pickup time or scan the code when your bin is full for a speedy dumpster alternative. We accept a wide range of construction materials such as wood, stone, glass, paints and more!
These donations are then processed by our team and made available in our Material Resale Store. "Imagine a sustainable bougie Home Depot" Says Founder Jillian Eddy, "..Like a scrap wonderland!"
Our goal is to resell these materials for as little cost to the buyer as possible. In order to keep pieces out of the landfill and support the artists in our community, we have found ways to make money without additional costs to you, the artists, in your quest to make art.
It is not only the availability of materials but also the issue of storing them and having space for the machinery needed to work with them. Thats why TSP is building a community shop space unlike any other.
Our Workspace is "Shop-Style" reflecting the studios where film and TV are created here in NYC . The space features a full Wood Working Shop, Paint Mixing Table, Plaster Station, Spray Booth and more. Members can enjoy access to all of these feature in addition to free materials for whatever they are working on in house!
We believe that collaboration is key to creating a more sustainable future. That's why we created the TSP brand. Our line of curated art and home decor features sustainable local artists and makers who turn our scraps into beautiful, unique finished pieces.
We price these high quality items to reflect the artists, environmental impact and to sustain not only the planet but our work. "If we can fund this work with happy clients who value and can afford high end interior design, then we are helping to close the loop not only between waste and want, but also between the wage gap in NYC." - TSP
